![]() My largest file is 11.6 GB, averaging between 5 & 8 GB, with my smallest full Blu Ray movie 2.75 GB. Expect 20-25% larger file sizes with the 17 setting, though.īTW, the file sizes are pretty tiny. Since I only have a tweaked 46" TV, and you have a 65-incher, you may very well need to go down (up in quality) to the 17 setting. This will give you constant quality on every one of your Blu Rays, with shorter (85-95 minute comedies) being lesser amount of data. D) Deblock: Off E) Grayscale: uncheckedģ) Video tab: A) Video codec: H.264 B) Framerate: Same as source, with Variable Framerate C) Quality: Constant quality 18. Wasting a tiny bit of HDD space on a couple of DVDs of extremely old videos is 1,000s of times better than making all of your new stuff look comparatively bad. Leave all four settings below Custom set to 0.Ģ) Filters tab: A) Detelecine: Default B) Decomb: Decomb Default setting C) Denoise: hqdn3d Strong setting Leave completely off. Here are the settings that I use for my Blu Ray discs, and on my tweaked 46-inch screen, I can see no difference between the uncompressed disc, and these settings:ġ) Picture tab: Change only 'Cropping' to the Custom setting. If you are used to watching movies that actually look good for the entire movie, you'll want to go with the way that Jag and I do it, with the constant quality settings. And it is the way to go, if you don't mind your Blu Ray movies looking more or less identical to uncompressed DVDs. When I first decided to try this whole 'compress my optical disks' thing, all signs from different Google searches led me to believe that using certain bitrates was the way to go. Two pass + target bitrate does not allocate bitrate better, it's actually worse. This is the best way to encode with x264 (and x265). The encoder will decide how much and where to put the bitrate to maintain that same perceived quality across the entire video. 23 is good enough for grain-free or video that have a lot of still images, but for busier sources you may want to use 22 or 21.Īnd that's it, you can just encode over and over always using the same settings. Default for x264 is 23, but anything between 18-23 is reasonable for HD material, 18 being the highest quality but probably not much smaller than the original. After you've picked something that you're comfortable waiting for (don't bother with placebo preset.), pick a CRF that satisfies your quality requirements. ![]() First pick a speed preset you are comfortable with in terms of encoding time (the slower the speed, the better the quality/space ratio will be). SD video is magnified more (making some of the flaws more visible) than HD material when you watch them full screen. You really shouldn't do that, you should just choose a speed preset and a CRF setting. Also you can typically get away with slightly higher crf values with HD material. These crf settings are with x264 encoding and the slow preset with SD material. Of course, the other settings make a difference too. At 30 it becomes very obvious the video is degraded. At the default 23 videos are noticeably worse but are watchable. At 18 videos look about the same as the source at normal playback speed. At 12 quality is about the same as the source even if look at still frames and zoom in. Think of the CRF values as the amount of detail you are going to throw away. High CRF values give small files and low quality. Low CRF values give high quality and large files. You should encode a few short test videos at different CRF settings to get a feel for what value you find suitable. You want to use quality based encoding when you want to be assured of the quality of the final result and don't care about the exact file size. The encoder just encodes every frame at the quality you specify (that's a highly simplified explanation). With quality based encoding (CRF in x264 and x265, called RF in Handbrake) you know what the quality of the video will be but you don't know what the final size will be. When you have a size requirement (eg, 700 MB to fit on a CD) you want to use this type of encoding to get the best quality at that size. When you use bitrate based encoding you know what the final file size will be (size = bitrate * running_time) but you don't really know what the quality will be. A high motion action movie will require a much higher bitrate. ![]() For example, a still shot of a bowl of fruit will require very little bitrate. Different videos require different bitrates to achieve the same quality. Now I see in most articles that these codecs specify the Quality factor, an integer value between 18-25, but then the file size can vary a lot between episodes. Back in the day I used to specify the exact file size I wanted and the bitrate was calculated accordingly.

The ceremony will be another high-profile moment for Ginsburg, who turned 80 this year and last month marked her 20th year on the court. Ginsburg said she thought she and her colleagues had not been asked previously to conduct a same-sex ceremony for fear it might compromise their ability to hear the issue when it came before the court. Justice Clarence Thomas performed a ceremony for radio host Rush Limbaugh. Ginsburg tied the knot for her son, for instance. It is not uncommon for Supreme Court justices to officiate at weddings, most often for former law clerks or close friends or relatives. Invited are stars of opera (Renee Fleming, Harolyn Blackwell), from Broadway (Ron Raines, Barbara Cook) and an array of some of Washington’s most influential philanthropic and arts patrons, such as Richard and Betsy DeVos, Catherine and Wayne Reynolds and Jacqueline Mars. Kaiser and Roberts are scheduled to be married in the Kennedy Center atrium Saturday night before 220 guests. The Supreme Court’s decisions in June had no effect on the marriage plans of Kaiser and Roberts because same-sex unions have been legal in Washington since 2010. The chief justice was in the minority that would have upheld the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, which said the federal government would recognize marriages only between a man and woman. The court said the federal government may not refuse to recognize legally married gay couples and reinstated a lower court ruling that found California’s ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. At the time that save-the-date cards were sent out this spring, there were jokes involving the coincidence of the names.Įarlier this summer, Ginsburg was in the majority in a pair of major gay rights victories at the Supreme Court. ![]() Roberts, who works at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is not related to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. Indeed, she has another planned for September. She added: “It won’t be long before there will be another” performed by a justice. “I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship,” Ginsburg said. Ginsburg seemed excited during a recent interview about being the first member of the court to conduct such a ceremony and said it was only a logical next step. After victories at the Supreme Court earlier this summer, a wave of litigation is challenging bans on same-sex marriages in states where they remain prohibited. Such marriages were virtually unheard of a little more than a decade ago but now are legal in the nation’s capital, 13 states and in all or part of 17 other countries. The gala wedding of Kaiser and economist John Roberts at the performing arts center brings together the nation’s highest court and the capital’s high society and will mark a new milepost in recognition of same-sex unions. WASHINGTON - Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first Supreme Court member to conduct a same-sex marriage ceremony Saturday when she officiates at the Washington wedding of Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser. If you switch your mindset more than your pantry, you will realize how many ingredients you actually have in your kitchen that are already vegan. You're probably thinking, how could I change my kitchen and switch to vegan products. We need to be conscious of this generation of plant based eater who doesn't have to "get used to" the ingredients. They prefer the flavors of the homemade veggie burger because they don't have a meat-eater palate that makes the other taste good. My kids grew up on vegan cheese on pizza and impossible burgers so it doesn't feel special to them. We see a swing back to whole food and vegetable ingredients rather than the over-processed food that new plant-based eaters think of as "revolutionary". We also have to remember, we've hit a time now where Plant-based eating is starting to adapt away from being a "food that we choose" to a younger audience of "a food that I grew up on." ![]() As we all know, when you make everything yourself and don't rely on processed foods or condiments, this is where the magic truly happens. This is something restaurant chains don't usually do but it makes all the difference. We prepare and make all our food in the kitchen at Veggie Grill and Más Veggies Taqueria. My advice is to handcraft these items as you would any other foods. That meal could incorporate mushrooms, jackfruit, cauliflower or sweet potatoes but in a way that is as indulgent or as healthy as you want to make it. What would someone that is an avid steak eater or who is paleo / eating a keto diet want and crave in a veggie forward dish? There is a huge trend right now of consumers looking for lower carb options, but they are under the impression that plant-based menu offerings are carb heavy. If you're a chef that doesn't cook plant-based food, start by thinking of your average customer and not just those that are vegan. Many of the fermented foods like miso and kimchi and sauerkraut add a depth of flavor that can take a vegetable to the next level. There are tons of sauces and condiments that enhance every food. It's true that you do need 'gateway' products for balance like a Gardein chicken patty, Beyond Meat Burger, or vegan shredded mozzarella but you must expand and build from that to ensure maximum flavor and broad appeal. Even though there are many innovative and incredible protein alternative products on the market today, vegetables need to play a key role. It's outdated and quite simply, unappetizing. The days of just putting a veggie burger on a bun or a meatless meatball on a sub are over. Here are a few tips to doing it right.įirst thing to remember is that plant-based means plants take center stage. So, if you're thinking about serving up a few plant-based dishes in your restaurant, you don't have to be intimidated and it doesn't have to be complicated. It could be for a lifelong hearty meat eater who needs to eat a plant-based diet for health purposes, the young salad eating millennial or for someone who is looking to eat whole food ingredients a few days a week. Many things that people love and eat daily are actually 'plant-based' and they don't even realize it. Those things are all vegan by nature and full of flavor. Think of chips and salsa, spaghetti and tomato sauce, beans and rice or even sourdough bread. Historically when people thought of vegan or plant-based food, unsavory or dull may have come to mind.
